Mercy and Truth

Day Forty-three

“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” Psalm 85:10

The Psalmist anticipates the cross with these words.  Only in the death of Jesus Christ do we find a perfect blend of mercy and truth. You cannot have truth without justice and you cannot have justice without judgment.  The violation of God’s command demands justice and that justice was satisfied by Christ’s death on the cross.  Christ’s death allowed God to be merciful toward the sinner without doing violence to His truth.

John the Apostle opens his gospel acknowledging  that Jesus was “full of grace and truth.” 69   Just as His death made it possible for mercy and truth to meet, so His life was characterized by a blend of grace and truth.  And so God deals with His people today.  Truth sets you free.  Grace and mercy shifts the blame for your sin from you to Jesus.  You need both.   If God dealt with you in truth, you could not handle it.  You pray, “Lord, show me the wickedness of my heart.”  God answers, “I cannot show you such a thing, for the revelation of your heart would destroy you.  I will show you only what you are able to endure.”  In this we see the mercy of God.

As you relate to others you must maintain a balance between mercy and truth. Men use to say to me, “Be honest, tell me what you really think.”  So I would tell them the truth and they became offended.   It was easy for me to blame them for asking since they really didn’t want the truth, until the Lord convicted me that I cannot handle truth either.  The Lord softens truth with a great deal of mercy.   I must deal with others the same way our Lord deals with me, a blend of mercy and truth.

Leviticus 13 Matthew 26:26-50 (New King James Version)

Leviticus 13

The Law Concerning Leprosy

13 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: “When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling, a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his body likea [a]leprous sore, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests. The priest shall examine the sore on the skin of the body; and if the hair on the sore has turned white, and the sore appears to bedeeper than the skin of his body, it isa leprous sore. Then the priest shall examine him, and pronounce him [b]unclean. But if the bright spot iswhite on the skin of his body, and does not appear to bedeeper than the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest shall isolate the one who hasthe sore seven days. And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day; and indeed ifthe sore appears to be as it was, andthe sore has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall isolate him another seven days. Then the priest shall examine him again on the seventh day; and indeed ifthe sore has faded, andthe sore has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is onlya scab, and he shall wash his clothes and be clean. But if the scab should at all spread over the skin, after he has been seen by the priest for his cleansing, he shall be seen by the priest again. And ifthe priest sees that the scab has indeed spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him [c]unclean. It isleprosy.

“When the leprous sore is on a person, then he shall be brought to the priest. 10 And the priest shall examine him;and indeed ifthe swelling on the skin iswhite, and it has turned the hair white, and there isa spot of raw flesh in the swelling, 11 it isan old leprosy on the skin of his body. The priest shall pronounce him [d]unclean, and shall not isolate him, for he isunclean.

12 “And if leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the one who hasthe sore, from his head to his foot, wherever the priest looks, 13 then the priest shall consider; and indeed ifthe leprosy has covered all his body, he shall pronounce himclean who hasthe sore. It has all turned white. He isclean. 14 But when raw flesh appears on him, he shall be unclean. 15 And the priest shall examine the raw flesh and pronounce him to be unclean; forthe raw flesh isunclean. It isleprosy. 16 Or if the raw flesh changes and turns white again, he shall come to the priest. 17 And the priest shall examine him; and indeed ifthe sore has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce himclean who hasthe sore. He isclean.

18 “If the body develops a boil in the skin, and it is healed, 19 and in the place of the boil there comes a white swelling or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the priest; 20 and if,when the priest sees it, it indeed appears deeper than the skin, and its hair has turned white, the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It isa leprous sore which has broken out of the boil. 21 But if the priest examines it, and indeed there areno white hairs in it, and it isnot deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall isolate him seven days; 22 and if it should at all spread over the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It isa [e]leprous sore. 23 But if the bright spot stays in one place, andhas not spread, it isthe scar of the boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

24 “Or if the body receives a burn on its skin by fire, and the raw fleshof the burn becomes a bright spot, reddish-white or white, 25 then the priest shall examine it; and indeed ifthe hair of the bright spot has turned white, and it appears deeper than the skin, it isleprosy broken out in the burn. Therefore the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It isa leprous sore. 26 But if the priest examines it, and indeed there areno white hairs in the bright spot, and it isnot deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall isolate him seven days. 27 And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day. If it has at all spread over the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It isa leprous sore. 28 But if the bright spot stays in one place, andhas not spread on the skin, but has faded, it isa swelling from the burn. The priest shall pronounce him clean, for it isthe scar from the burn.

29 “If a man or woman has a sore on the head or the beard, 30 then the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed if it appears deeper than the skin, and there isin it thin yellow hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It isa scaly leprosy of the head or beard. 31 But if the priest examines the scaly sore, and indeed it does not appear deeper than the skin, and there isno black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the one who hasthe scale seven days. 32 And on the seventh day the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed ifthe scale has not spread, and there is no yellow hair in it, and the scale does not appear deeper than the skin, 33 he shall shave himself, but the scale he shall not shave. And the priest shall isolate the one who hasthe scale another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scale; and indeed ifthe scale has not spread over the skin, and does not appear deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. He shall wash his clothes and be clean. 35 But if the scale should at all spread over the skin after his cleansing, 36 then the priest shall examine him; and indeed ifthe scale has spread over the skin, the priest need not seek for yellow hair. He isunclean. 37 But if the scale appears to be at a standstill, and there is black hair grown up in it, the scale has healed. He isclean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

38 “If a man or a woman has bright spots on the skin of the body, specificallywhite bright spots, 39 then the priest shall look; and indeed ifthe bright spots on the skin of the body aredull white, it isa white spot thatgrows on the skin. He isclean.

40 “As for the man whose hair has fallen from his head, he isbald, buthe isclean. 41 He whose hair has fallen from his forehead, he isbald on the forehead, buthe isclean. 42 And if there is on the bald head or bald forehead a reddish-white sore, it isleprosy breaking out on his bald head or his bald forehead. 43 Then the priest shall examine it; and indeed ifthe swelling of the sore isreddish-white on his bald head or on his bald forehead, as the appearance of leprosy on the skin of the body, 44 he is a leprous man. He isunclean. The priest shall surely pronounce him [f]unclean; his sore ison his head.

45 “Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46 He shall be unclean. All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He isunclean, and he shall [g]dwell alone; his dwelling shall beoutside the camp.

The Law Concerning Leprous Garments

47 “Also, if a garment has a [h]leprous plague in it, whether it isa woolen garment or a linen garment, 48 whether it isin the warp or woof of linen or wool, whether in leather or in anything made of leather, 49 and if the plague is greenish or reddish in the garment or in the leather, whether in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, it isa leprous [i]plague and shall be shown to the priest. 50 The priest shall examine the plague and isolate that which hasthe plague seven days. 51 And he shall examine the plague on the seventh day. If the plague has spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, in the leather orin anything made of leather, the plague isan active leprosy. It isunclean. 52 He shall therefore burn that garment in which is the plague, whether warp or woof, in wool or in linen, or anything of leather, for it isan active leprosy; the garmentshall be burned in the fire.

53 “But if the priest examines it, and indeed the plague has not spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, 54 then the priest shall command that they wash the thingin which isthe plague; and he shall isolate it another seven days. 55 Then the priest shall examine the plague after it has been washed; and indeed ifthe plague has not changed its color, though the plague has not spread, it isunclean, and you shall burn it in the fire; it continues eating away, whetherthe damage isoutside or inside. 56 If the priest examines it, and indeed the plague has faded after washing it, then he shall tear it out of the garment, whether out of the warp or out of the woof, or out of the leather. 57 But if it appears again in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, it isa spreading plague;you shall burn with fire that in which is the plague. 58 And if you wash the garment, either warp or woof, or whatever is made of leather, if the plague has disappeared from it, then it shall be washed a second time, and shall be clean.

59 “This isthe law of the leprous plague in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or woof, or in anything made of leather, to pronounce it clean or to pronounce it unclean.”

Matthew 26:26-50

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, [a]blessed and broke it,and gave itto the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave itto them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the [b]new covenant, which is shed for many for the [c]remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be [d]made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:

‘I will strike the Shepherd,

And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”

33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are [e]made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”

34 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”

And so said all the disciples.

The Prayer in the Garden

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed iswilling, but the flesh isweak.”

42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [f]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are youstill sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [g]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane

47 And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

50 But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?”

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.

Abortion, sex outside of marriage, hatred & divisiveness, greed, pride, only to name a few and only scratches the surface. One recent and heinous example on how this evil tide is moving is in the state of New York, where law makers declare a new law wherein every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion up to term.  “Convicted criminals aren’t subjected to the death penalty in New York state, but now children up until the ninth month of pregnancy can be given lethal injections and poisoned to death,” said Live Action founder and president Lila Rose. “This is no different than infanticide.”  Please Pray and Fast for our nation to turn from this evil that is enveloping us all.
