Day 9/15 – The Divine Dwelling Place

Fellowship– Matthew 18:20 (ESV)“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20

“The Scriptures unanimously declare the self-sufficiency of God. “If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.” {Psalms 50:12}   We, His creatures, can add nothing to Him or what He does.  God invites us to give our lives ministering to people, not because He needs us, but rather because He wants us to accrue eternal gain while on earth, and we do that by spending ourselves for others.”     Walter A. Henrichsen (“Walt”)

The Divine Dwelling Place

Day Two Hundred Fifty-eight

“For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:

‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.'”   Isaiah 57:15

Isaiah’s words are a study in contrasts.  The transcendent God draws near to man. The High and Lofty One comes to those who are humble.  He who is holy dwells with the contrite sinner.  The One who inhabits eternity enters time to have a relationship with finite man.  The Sovereign of the universe reaches down to sinful people and draws them to Himself.

You must maintain an appreciation of this contrast in order to have a healthy relationship with God.  During the last two centuries the difference and distance between God and man was all but forgotten in Christian thought.  Human logic decreed that people are basically good.  Since people are like God, God is like people.  Jesus was emphasized as human rather than divine.  With this blurring of the difference and distance between the Creator and His creation, the Christian message was compromised.   If you are good and God is like you, then you not only lose your sense of depravity, you have little need for Him.  When you lose your fear of Judgment, you lose your need for salvation.

You worship a God who is holy, transcendent, and eternal.  The miracle is, He is willing to have a relationship with you, a sinner, bound by the limitations of being a creature, and incapable of initiating a relationship with your Creator.  Never lose your awe of it all.

Proverbs 22-24 2 Corinthians 8 (New King James Version)

Proverbs 22-24

The Value of a Good Name

goodname is to be chosen rather than great riches,

Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

The rich and the poor have this in common,

The Lord isthe maker of them all.

A prudent manforesees evil and hides himself,

But the simple pass on and are punished.

By humility andthe fear of the Lord

Areriches and honor and life.

Thorns andsnares arein the way of the perverse;

He who guards his soul will be far from them.

Train up a child in the way he should go,

[a]And when he is old he will not depart from it.

The rich rules over the poor,

And the borrower isservant to the lender.

He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow,[b]

And the rod of his anger will fail.

He who has a [c]generous eye will be blessed,

For he gives of his bread to the poor.

Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave;

Yes, strife and reproach will cease.

He who loves purity of heart

And hasgrace on his lips,

The king will behis friend.

The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge,

But He overthrows the words of the faithless.

The lazy mansays, “There isa lion outside!

I shall be slain in the streets!”

The mouth of an immoral woman isa deep pit;

He who is abhorred by the Lord will fall there.

Foolishness isbound up in the heart of a child;

The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches,

Andhe who gives to the rich, willsurely cometo poverty.

Sayings of the Wise

Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,

And apply your heart to my knowledge;

For it isa pleasant thing if you keep them within you;

Let them all be fixed upon your lips,

So that your trust may be in the Lord;

I have instructed you today, even you.

Have I not written to you excellent things

Of counsels and knowledge,

That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth,

That you may answer words of truth

To those who [d]send to you?

Do not rob the poor because he ispoor,

Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;

For the Lord will plead their cause,

And plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

Make no friendship with an angry man,

And with a furious man do not go,

Lest you learn his ways

And set a snare for your soul.

Do not be one of those who [e]shakes hands in a pledge,

One of those who is [f]surety for debts;

If you have nothing with whichto pay,

Why should he take away your bed from under you?

Do not remove the ancient [g]landmark

Which your fathers have set.

Do you see a man who[h]excels in his work?

He will stand before kings;

He will not stand before [i]unknown men.

Listen to Your Father

When you sit down to eat with a ruler,

Consider carefully what isbefore you;

And put a knife to your throat

If you area man given to appetite.

Do not desire his delicacies,

For they aredeceptive food.

Do not overwork to be rich;

Because of your own understanding, cease!

[j]Will you set your eyes on that which is not?

For richescertainly make themselves wings;

They fly away like an eagle towardheaven.

Do not eat the bread of a[k] miser,

Nor desire his delicacies;

For as he thinks in his heart, so ishe.

“Eat and drink!” he says to you,

But his heart is not with you.

The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up,

And waste your pleasant words.

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,

For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

Do not remove the ancient [l]landmark,

Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;

For their Redeemer ismighty;

He will plead their cause against you.

Apply your heart to instruction,

And your ears to words of knowledge.

Do not withhold correction from a child,

For ifyou beat him with a rod, he will not die.

You shall beat him with a rod,

And deliver his soul from [m]hell.

My son, if your heart is wise,

My heart will rejoice—indeed, I myself;

Yes, my [n]inmost being will rejoice

When your lips speak right things.

Do not let your heart envy sinners,

But be zealousfor the fear of the Lord all the day;

For surely there is a [o]hereafter,

And your hope will not be cut off.

Hear, my son, and be wise;

And guide your heart in the way.

Do not mix with winebibbers,

Orwith gluttonous eaters of meat;

For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,

And drowsiness will clothe a manwith rags.

Listen to your father who begot you,

And do not despise your mother when she is old.

Buy the truth, and do not sell it,

Alsowisdom and instruction and understanding.

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,

And he who begets a wise childwill delight in him.

Let your father and your mother be glad,

And let her who bore you rejoice.

My son, give me your heart,

And let your eyes observe my ways.

For a harlot isa deep pit,

And a seductress isa narrow well.

She also lies in wait as fora victim,

And increases the unfaithful among men.

Who has woe?

Who has sorrow?

Who has contentions?

Who has complaints?

Who has wounds without cause?

Who has redness of eyes?

Those who linger long at the wine,

Those who go in search of mixed wine.

Do not look on the wine when it is red,

When it sparkles in the cup,

Whenit [p]swirls around smoothly;

At the last it bites like a serpent,

And stings like a viper.

Your eyes will see strange things,

And your heart will utter perverse things.

Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the [q]midst of the sea,

Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:

“They have struck me, butI was not hurt;

They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.

When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?

Do Not Envy Evil Men

Do not be envious of evil men,

Nor desire to be with them;

For their heart devises violence,

And their lips talk of troublemaking.

Through wisdom a house is built,

And by understanding it is established;

By knowledge the rooms are filled

With all precious and pleasant riches.

A wise man isstrong,

Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;

For by wise counsel you will wage your own war,

And in a multitude of counselors there issafety.

Wisdom istoo lofty for a fool;

He does not open his mouth in the gate.

He who plots to do evil

Will be called a [r]schemer.

The devising of foolishness issin,

And the scoffer isan abomination to men.

Ifyou faint in the day of adversity,

Your strength issmall.

Deliver those whoare drawn toward death,

And hold back thosestumbling to the slaughter.

If you say, “Surely we did not know this,”

Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it?

He who keeps your soul, does He notknow it?

And will He notrender to eachman according to his deeds?

My son, eat honey because it isgood,

And the honeycomb which issweet to your taste;

So shallthe knowledge of wisdom beto your soul;

If you have found it,there is a [s]prospect,

And your hope will not be cut off.

Do not lie in wait, O wicked man,against the dwelling of the righteous;

Do not plunder his resting place;

For a righteous manmay fall seven times

And rise again,

But the wicked shall fall by calamity.

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,

And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;

Lest the Lord see it,and [t]it displease Him,

And He turn away His wrath from him.

Do not fret because of evildoers,

Nor be envious of the wicked;

For there will be no prospect for the evil man;

The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

My son, fear the Lord and the king;

Do not associate with those given to change;

For their calamity will rise suddenly,

And who knows the ruin those two can bring?

Further Sayings of the Wise

23 These thingsalso belongto the wise:

It isnot good to [u]show partiality in judgment.

He who says to the wicked, “You arerighteous,”

Him the people will curse;

Nations will abhor him.

But those who rebuke the wickedwill have delight,

And a good blessing will come upon them.

He who gives a right answer kisses the lips.

Prepare your outside work,

Make it fit for yourself in the field;

And afterward build your house.

Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,

[v]For would you deceive with your lips?

Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;

I will render to the man according to his work.”

I went by the field of the lazy man,

And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

And there it was, all overgrown with thorns;

Its surface was covered with nettles;

Its stone wall was broken down.

When I saw it,I considered itwell;

I looked on it andreceived instruction:

A little sleep, a little slumber,

A little folding of the hands to rest;

So shall your poverty come like[w]a prowler,

And your need like [x]an armed man.

2 Corinthians 8

Excel in Giving

Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. For I bear witness that according to theirability, yes, and beyond theirability, they werefreely willing, imploring us with much urgency [a]that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And not onlyas we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and thento us by the will of God. So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well. But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—seethat you abound in this grace also.

Christ Our Pattern

I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

10 And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11 but now you also must complete the doing of it;that as there wasa readiness to desire it,so therealso may bea completion out of what youhave. 12 For if there is first a willing mind, it isaccepted according to what one has, andnot according to what he does not have.

13 For I donot meanthat others should be eased and you burdened; 14 but by an equality, thatnow at this time your abundance may supplytheir lack, that their abundance also may supplyyour lack—that there may be equality. 15 As it is written, “He who gatheredmuch had nothing left over, and he who gatheredlittle had no lack.”

Collection for the Judean Saints

16 But thanks beto God who [b]puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17 For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord. 18 And we have sent with him the brother whose praise isin the gospel throughout all the churches, 19 and not only that,but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us to the glory of the Lord Himself and to showyour ready mind, 20 avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us— 21 providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

22 And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which we havein you. 23 If anyone inquiresabout Titus, he ismy partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren are inquired about, they aremessengers[c] of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24 Therefore show to them, [d]and before the churches, the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.
