“You are complete in Him.” You can add nothing to who you are by your own effort; you have nothing to prove, either to God, others, or yourself. You are important, not because of your performance, but because the Creator God of the universe declares you to be important. Secure in the fact that you are an “heir of God and fellow heir with Christ,” you can live the life of a humble servant of Christ, freely spending yourself in meeting the needs of others. Walter A. Henrichsen (“Walt”) ———/:///// Thoughts from the Diary of a Desperate Man by Walter A Henrichsen (“Walt”) The author of Hebrews argues that history merely unfolds what God completed before the foundation of the world; to submit your will to His defines what it means to “rest.” Thinking people from every culture, religion, and age, believe in pre-determinism. The Bible, embracing the fact of pre-determinism, argues that behind it all is the purposeful hand of Providence. Nobody controls his own life. The following rhetorical questions reveal this fact: Did you determine when you were born? Your parents? The color of your skin, hair, or eyes? The country in which you were born? Your gifts, abilities and intelligence? The circumstances that flow through your life, such as whether you contract cancer? In all probability, you will have no say over when you die. When asking yourself what it is that you control, you conclude that, by and large, only your attitude over what you cannot control. Most of life you spend deciding how you will respond rather than initiating what you will do. Even the decisions you make set in motion events you can only barely discern before the fact and over which you have no real control. Herein lies the value of an intimate relationship with the Creator, the One who does decide. People resist submitting to Christ because they do not want to lose control over their lives. The purpose of idolatry is to create a god that you can manipulate and thus control. The thirst for autonomy is acute. In reality, it is a poor reason for being a rebel; you do not control the truly substantive decisions in your life in either case. Jesus is Lord whether you admit it or not. And so it will be when life comes to a close; at the name of Jesus “every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord.”57 You are well served yielding to His authority in this life while your fate in eternity still hangs in the balance, rather than after death when it is too late. 57 Philippians 2:10 ———/:///// Exodus 36-38 Matthew 23:1-22 (New King James Version) Exodus 36-38 Matthew 23:1-22 |
