“Paul says, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”114 To disobey government is to disobey God.” Reference: Romans 13:1-2. ———/:///// Thoughts from the Diary of a Desperate Man by Walter A Henrichsen (“Walt”) “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22 People can force you to submit, whether you want to or not. This does not mean, however, that in mind and heart you, in fact, submitted. True submission can either be an act of the will or a product of your world-view. For many it is an act of the will; they yield because they see the necessity for it, not because they want to. The follower of Christ freely submits because his world-view is shaped by Scripture and understands it serves his interest. For example, to the degree that you understand your depravity and propensity to drift into trouble, you will eagerly submit to the authority of Christ in your life. Paul commands the wife to submit to her husband. Of the biblical obligations laid down by the Apostle in Ephesians 5, the woman has the greater challenge, that is, it requires greater faith. For men do dumb things. Not that women don’t do dumb things, but rather that women are obliged to submit to their husbands when they do dumb things. The submissive wife must have confidence that God is greater than her husband and is willing to protect her from his mistakes. The wife, of course, has an easier time submitting to her husband if he models submission, especially to God, but the Apostle Paul does not include this condition in his command to the wife. You submit to authority, not because that authority is infallible, nor because you can clearly see the rationale behind your needing to submit. Rather, you submit because the One who superintends the affairs of the universe says that you are best served submitting. The wife who does not hold this as a deep-seated conviction, will find it difficult, if not impossible, to obey “wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” ———/:///// 2 Samuel 21-22 Luke 18:24-43 (New King James Version) David Avenges the Gibeonites Luke 18:24-43 |
