“You must be diligent to carefully steward the precious time God gives you. Like any other resource, if you do not plan your time it will evaporate without your being able to account for it.” Walter A. Henrichsen (“Walt”)
Thoughts from the Diary of a Desperate Man by Walter A Henrichsen (“Walt”)
“And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?” Numbers 14:3
You must take care that a legitimate concern not become an excuse to disobey. God called the Hebrews to conquer the land He gave them for an inheritance. Accomplishing the task required that they defeat the children of Anak, giants “in whose sight we were as grasshoppers.”195 Men feel keenly their responsibility toward their families, and rightly so. “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”196 You dare not allow this concern, however, to become an excuse to avoid following the call of God. One of the first signs of turning from your call is an undue concern for the wife and children.
Christ, not your family, determines your call. When you follow Christ you trust Him to provide for your family. A man says, “I think my wife and I will visit the foreign field to determine whether they have good schools for the children and it is a proper environment for the family.” Another says, “We will take this missionary assignment for a couple of years to determine if we wish to make a career out of it.”
There is a real but invisible line between letting God determine your call and using circumstances as part of that determination. No one but you and God knows when you cross it, but you are cautioned not to allow legitimate concerns to move you into unbelief. Israel’s failure in this regard resulted in their spending forty years taking an eleven-day journey.
