“We have to determine our theology from the Word of God, not from what we feel.” R C Sproul
———/:///// Thoughts from the Diary of a Desperate Man by Walter A Henrichsen (“Walt”) “And Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful of form and face.” Genesis 29:17 Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Leah, the older of the two, lacked the natural beauty that attracts the attention of men. In some way her eyes detracted from her looks. Jacob worked seven years for the hand of Rachel, but on their wedding night Laban switched sisters, resulting in the union of Jacob and Leah. Jacob then worked seven more years for the hand of Rachel. “And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.”215 Of the twelve sons of Jacob (the twelve tribes of Israel) Leah had six and Rachel had two. Among the six sons of Leah were Judah, representing the kingly tribe from which David and Jesus Christ came, and Levi, the priestly tribe from which Moses and Aaron came. Rachel worshipped stolen idols and lied when asked if she had them. She died in childbearing and was buried on the side of the road between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Leah was buried with her husband and the other patriarchs. The outer beauty can easily captivate you, causing you to miss the inner beauty that delights the heart of God. The former fades and becomes grotesque while the latter increases in radiance. Thus the Holy Spirit says, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”216 215 Genesis 29:31 ———/:///// 1 Chronicles 7-9 John 6:22-44 (New King James Version) 1 Chronicles 7-9 John 6:22-44 |
