“There are only two people in life that can hurt you: you and God. Because He is good, seeking only your best, in the final analysis, only you can destroy your life.” Walter A. Henrichsen (“Walt”)
———/:///// Thoughts from the Diary of a Desperate Man by Walter A Henrichsen (“Walt”) “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” Ephesians 1:5 All that God does is for His glory, serving His purpose. God did not create you for your good pleasure, but for His own good pleasure. All that will profit you in this life, as well as the life to come, is the by-product of God calling attention to His own goodness and greatness. The Old Testament prophets call this to Israel’s attention again and again. “I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another.” 217 The prophet Ezekiel, speaking of Israel declares, “But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; they did not every man cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they dwelt, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.”218 Although we are created in His image, we are creatures. He is the Creator. Our interests are tied to His interests. God’s grace is seen in His allowing us this link; we profit from submission to His authority. The desire for profit is not wrong, autonomy is wrong. You will only make sense out of life by understanding that your purpose, happiness, and hope are firmly attached to God’s plan to bring glory to Himself. His love and commitment to you does not flow from any intrinsic worth that He sees in you, but rather that your submission to His authority brings Him pleasure. Although God declares you to be of intrinsic worth, it is a worth He imputes to you, not a worth you naturally have. Your eternal happiness and temporal joy is the outgrowth of His glory. 217 Isaiah 48:11 ———/:///// 1 Chronicles 13-15 John 7:1-27 (New King James Version) 1 Chronicles 13-15 John 7:1-27 |
