Unfortunately, by now, I think we’ve all grown accustomed to partisan politics and amoral politicians using social issues to further their own political agenda. At no time has this practice been more prevalent, or more blatant, than in 2020. With a presidential election looming next month, it’s never been clearer that, when it comes to winning, many politicians will do whatever it takes, including using a global pandemic to dictate what the public can and cannot do. In fact, looking at some of the restrictions placed on Nevadans this year, I’m beginning to have flashbacks to soviet Russia.
We have a prime example of this in our own backyard. Current Governor Steve Sisolak has cherry picked what events are “safe” to move forward and what events are deemed unsafe. Shockingly, it seems that conservative events are inherently unsafe while anything the governor really “feels like” doing is, of course, perfectly safe. The rules seem to change depending on the event and audience. A prime example was the governor’s recent personal interest in shutting down an “Evangelicals for Trump” rally. While his team said that he doesn’t request certain events be shut down, leaked emails reveal that he was particularly interested in shutting that event down.
Sisolak has controlled every aspect of Nevada’s lockdown, allowing some events to slide while ruthlessly closing other events, churches and businesses. Meanwhile, not one to deny himself, Sisolak has frequently been seen in public, eating, enjoying entertainment and, essentially, engaging in the very activities he claims we need to stop in order to protect each other. It’s hypocritical and obvious; this is partisan politics at its worse. To make matters even more frustrating, when asked direct questions about when he plans to stop holding Nevada hostage to the whims of politics, Sisolak evades and dodges, providing no real answers. And, no real leadership.
Never has an election year been more important, nor more divided. As our state and country seek relief and answers for what has been a challenging year for so many, real leaders are necessary.
Call to Action: Our very future is at stake. Seeing the way liberal leaders have politicized the COVID-19 pandemic and every other social and environmental issue that has arisen in 2020 should scare you as much as it does me. Are we to live in a country where the people have no voice? Should we allow politicians to tell us what we believe and what we say is important rather than the other way around? We must tell these partisan politicians exactly what we think of their poor leadership. It’s time to fire them and clean house. We do so through voting. Research the candidates and issues and vote for what you believe in. This is our country, the country of “We the People”; let’s take it back.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)“If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
