Unity and Union

Day Two Hundred Thirty-three

“I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissension among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

Unity and union are not the same. You can unite in marriage, and thus be in union with one another, and not have unity. Union is the enemy of unity, as easily seen in marriage. A man and woman meet, fall in love with one another, and talk of the possibility of marriage. During their courtship each seeks to please the other, delighting in each other’s idiosyncrasies. Once the marriage is consummated, things change. They now have a vested interest in how their spouse behaves. So in subtle ways they seek to change one another in hopes of making their spouse better, all at the expense of unity.

In His High Priestly prayer, our Lord prayed for unity, ”that they may be one, even as we are one.”307 There may be logical, compelling reasons to form a union, but Christ wants unity. People are attracted to union for the purpose of control and so that they have something to join. God demands unity for the purpose of harmony and as a witness to a watching world. Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians, in this section of his epistles, sought to dispel any impression that he was building his own organization or recruiting people to himself.

You are free to create an organization, for the Bible does not prohibit them. But remember: You are part of the Body of Jesus Christ and He cannot be divided. To not be in unity with your fellow believers is to do violence to His Person and thus provoke His anger.

Stewards of the Mysteries of God

4 Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human [a]court. PRAYER REQUESTS

Please Pray for Brother Robert. Robert says He has a Calling to establish a Church. His Prayer request is “… that God puts together a really amazing ministry team. I see it in the Scriptures. There were ministers, elders, deacons. Those seem to be three different categories of the people serving the body. It seems like that was the simple order they had set up. But it was a spiritual thing that would function through the power of the Holy Spirit. My prayer request would be that the Lord puts together the ministry team in what I feel Him asking me to be a part of.”

Please Pray for Mark H. He has a blood clot in his leg and is suffering terrible pain. Pray for God’s Healing and undeniable Touch on Mark’s life.

Please continue to keep Sister Fabiola and her children in Mexico in our Prayers. This Sister and her family, in a short time period, have been hit with a more tragedies (persecutions) than most of us have in our entire life time… the murder of her husband, x-husband and one of her children. And, recently, her modest home (a shack by any American standard) was burnt to the ground. …Her neighbor’s house caught fire and due to the closeness of her home, it caught fire, too. Brothers & Sisters, please Pray for God’s Holy touch on Fabiola and her family.

Please continue to Pray for Geo, a banker, who was deployed by the military to the Mideast. Pray God would keep him safe and that God would bring Geo closer to Him; and, that Geo would share God with all his company and those who come in contact with him.

I’ve been told by one Geo’s co-workers, Lorraine Flores, who says she considers Geo a son, that the day Geo was deployed to the Mideast, his girlfriend delivered his new baby. Please Pray Geo would Walk in God’s Light and be a Godly husband and father. And, please Pray for Geo’s family. (Also, please Pray for both Lorraine Flores and her biological son that was deployed the same day as Geo, but to Africa.)

They are planning to reunite the family again under one roof in the next few months. Please Pray for their total reconciliation with God at their helm.

Please continue to Pray for a group of well-known Southern Nevada commercial real estate brokers and associates recently in a one-car accident. The occupants had all been drinking alcohol. One passenger died leaving 3 young daughters, one suffered serious head trauma, two had mild trauma, and the driver has been charged. Please Pray for the driver and all those effected by this tragedy …that God would direct their eyes to Him, The King of Mercy, Grace and Salvation.

Please continue Pray for our President and ALL our government leaders of both parties. Pray they would submit their authority to His Authority and ask for His Wisdom in directing the affairs of our nation. Please Pray that God would open their eyes and they would be obedient to His Will.

Please continue to Pray for Brother Frank Sun, a Taiwanese, that owns several businesses in China and Taiwan. Please Pray Frank will be bold in his sharing Christ in his companies and that he will be faithful to disciple the new Believers.

Legalism

Day Two Hundred Twenty-four

“You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.” Mark 7:8

You will not find the word “legalism” in Scripture. People use this word to describe at least two types of people: First, those who believe that keeping the law is a requirement for salvation. Second, those who add to the commandments of God. Both manifestations of legalism are deadly, but our Lord seems to express a particular abhorrence for the second type. He faulted the religious leaders for ignoring the commandments of God and adding in their place the traditions of man. Usually the two go together. If you feel competent to add to God’s commands, you will probably feel competent to delete some of them. Adding to God’s commandments usually comes in an endeavor to give definition to the positive commands. For example, God says, “Honor your parents.” What does this look like? This was the illustration Jesus used in Mark 7.

You can easily slip into this mindset if you are not careful, like the individual who believes it is wrong to gamble, but takes a brother to civil court for a supposed wrong. Ask yourself, what would shock you more: seeing someone drinking a beer in the Sunday service or listening to a woman preacher? I am not suggesting that gambling and drinking are good ideas; rather that God did not see fit to prohibit them. You are safe only when you call sin what the Bible disallows and nothing more.

Romans 12

Living Sacrifices to God

12 I beseech[a] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which isyour [b]reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what isthat good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Serve God with Spiritual Gifts

3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himselfmore highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, beingmany, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them:if prophecy, let usprophesyin proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use itin ourministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Behave Like a Christian

9 Letlove bewithout hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Bekindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient[c] in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given[d] to hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[e] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rathergive place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance isMine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore

As you may know, we have kept Sister Fabiola and her children in Mexico on our Prayer Request list for quite a while now. This Sister and her family, in a short time period, has been hit with a more tragedies(persecution) than most of us in an entire life time… the murder of her husband, x-husband and one of her children. RECENTLY, her modest home (a shack by any American standard) was burnt to the ground. …Her neighbor’s house caught fire and due to the closeness of her home, it caught fire, too. Brothers & Sisters, please Pray for God’s Holy touch on Fabiola and her family. Although we, His Children, are closely monitoring what assistance the Family of God might be able to provide the family through our Brother Ron Brink, in Mexico… our Prayers are essential. Please don’t relent!

UPDATE: I’ve been told by one Geo’s co-workers, Lorraine Flores, who says she considers Geo a son, that the day Geo was deployed to the Mideast, his girlfriend delivered his new baby. The Danger of Presumption

Day One Hundred Sixty-five

“But the Lord was angry with me on your account, and would not hearken to me; and the Lord said to me, ·Let it suffice you; speak no more to me of this matter.'” Deuteronomy 3:26

On the Exodus the people looked to Moses rather than to God for the meeting of their needs. Whenever anything not to their liking happened, they blamed Moses. When they complained because of inadequate water, God told Moses to strike the rock. Water flowed from the rock and the people drank. On a later occasion when the people were again thirsty, God told Moses to speak to the rock. Exasperated with the complaining people, in frustration Moses struck the rock.

For this infraction God denied him the privilege of entering the Promised Land. Nothing he could say or do would change God’s decision. He entered the road of no return.

If your relationship with Christ is close, you feel secure, knowing that what He promised He will provide. This security comes from your understanding the grace of God; you are His child, not because of your performance, but His performance on your behalf. Grace invites presumption as surely as security invites carelessness. Be careful that you do not allow your understanding of grace to lead you into presumption. Do not emulate the mistake of Moses.

Intermarriage with Pagans

9 When these things were done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, with respect to the abominations of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters as wivesfor themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed is mixed with the peoples of thoselands. Confession of Improper Marriages

10 Now while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very bitterly. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, oneof the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have trespassed[d] against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. 3 Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. 4 Arise, for thismatter isyour responsibility.We also arewith you. Be of good courage, and do it.”

5 Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. 6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and whenhe came there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.

7 And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, 8 and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity.

9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It wasthe ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of thismatter and because of heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have [e]transgressed and [f]have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11 Now therefore, make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.”

12 Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. 13 But there aremany people; it isthe season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is thisthe work of one or two days, for there aremany of us who have transgressed in this matter. 14 Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support.

16 Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, withcertain heads of the fathers’ households,were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 By the first day of the first month they finished questioningall the men who had taken pagan wives.

Pagan Wives Put Away

18 And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives the followingwere found of the sons of Jeshua the son of [g]Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 And they gave their promise that they would put away their wives; and beingguilty, they presenteda ram of the flock as their trespass offering.

20 Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Prologue

The Holy Spirit Promised

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This sameJesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the sonof Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the sonof James. 14 These all continued with one [d]accord in prayer [e]and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Matthias Chosen

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [f]disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men andbrethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.”

Please Pray for Sister Sonia’s x-husband, Raymond, he has prostrate cancer. His prognosis seems positive, but please Pray for him.

Sister Diane’s grandson, Logan, needs eye surgery. Please Pray for Logan and his surgeon.

Brother John LaPorte’s niece is having baby girl (Praise Report). Please Pray for the health of the mother and her baby girl.

Please Pray for Brother David Frear’s mother-in-law and husband, Pete. Pete is older and his health is failing him. Also, please Pray for Juan’s recovery from 2 transplants and added health issues since the transplants.

Please Pray for our President and all our government leaders. Pray they would submit their authority to His Authority and ask for His Wisdom in directing the affairs of our country. Pray that God would open their eyes and they would be obedient to His Will.

Please Pray for a group of well known Southern Nevada commercial real estate brokers and associates recently in an auto accident. There were 5 individuals in this one car accident. It is our understanding, all had been drinking alcohol and the one driving was sited as driving under the influence of alcohol… one passenger was killed and one passenger is in a comma. We understand the others had minor injuries, but for sure, we know all involved, along with their families, need Prayer.

Brother Rick Pavlat wife, Ollie, recently had a stroke. She is doing better but her left side has been affected. She is going to need rehabilitation and we would greatly appreciate Prayer. Additionally, as Rick and Ollie are semi-retired missionaries, they have no insurance and request your Prayers for cover the cost of care resulting from the stroke.
